In recent years we reported on celebrities who are sangomas and some of them shocked us. The truth is that it has become a norm for celebrities to accept ancestral calling of becoming sangomas. We will look at more celebrities who we didn’t know they became sangomas in 2023.

No1 is Bongani Masondo

The Skeem Saam actor Bongani Masondo became a Sangoma in 2011 after attending the traditional healing school where he was initiated. He had to put his acting career on hold to achieve this. In 2017, after initiation, Masondo asked his Sangoma superiors that he would like to resume acting and music career, and put on hold his Sangoma duties. He claimed he would come back to his Sangoma duties in the future but at that moment he was focusing on acting and music career. [1]

No2 is Tol A$$ MO

Comedian and TV reality star revealed in 2021 that he had accepted his calling of becoming a Sangoma. According to a news article by Daily Sun, the comedian and wife tried to run away from his calling but eventually they accepted it. After that Tol A$$ Mo attended an initiation school of becoming a Sangoma for 6 months before graduating in 2021. During the initiation, Tol was given a new name “Mahambahlega” which means you make people laugh. Tol is a both a Christian and Sangoma, he pray to God and talks to his ancestors.

No3 is Mona Monyane

In 2021, actress Mona Monyane accepted her ancestral calling and she is now a sangoma. She claims that answering her gods into becoming a sangoma has brought her healing spiritually and emotionally. Speaking to TshisaLIVE, Mona said that though she had accepted her ancestral calling and went to a shrine, she does not practise as a “sangoma”.

No4 is Zola Hashatsi

Former Rhythm City actor and television presenter Zola Hashatsi opened up to the public about accepting his ancestral calling. According to Daily Sun, Zola accepted the calling in 2018 but he decided to go public in 2019. Zola claims that he knew of his calling back in 2009 when his grandmother died but he ignored it. He believes that when his grandmother passed away, her spirit became his dlozi. He claims his ancestral gift is to help people heal and nothing more. Zola is both a Christian and a traditional healer, he claims he was always a special kid back home who was focused on church and school.

No5 is Phelo Bala

Phelo Bala had to acclaim that his calling is nothing new after being criticized by fans that it’s now a celebrity trend to become a sangoma. The youngest of the singing Bala Brothers and former Joyous Celebration member accepted his calling around 2014. Phelo denied being fake and said no one would want to fake something so demanding and challenging. He claims that it’s not a joke to be a sangoma, if he had a choice he would not have chosen to become a sangoma. [2]

No6 is Tina Jaxa

In 2016, the actress Tina Jaxa confirmed to news reporters that she is a trained sangoma and prophetess. She claimed she kept it private for more than a decade and doesn’t like to talk about it out of respect. During the interview with Sunday World, Jaxa claimed she had received the gift more than 20 years ago when she was a teenager. She would see visions and messages during the night, and when she got married, her husband permitted her to go for initiation.

No7 is Nelisiwe Sibiya

Former Durban Gen actress Nelisiwe Sibiya has been going through a phase of ancestral calling. In November 2022, she told the news reporters that she was experiencing a sangoma calling which she feels obligated to answer. By that time she was acting as a young lady who was accepting her ancestral calling on etv drama series Durban Gen. So, she claimed that fiction is trying to turn into reality because she is receiving real life call  to become a sangoma. We do not know if she ever become a sangoma since there are no updates yet.

No8 Gigi Lamayne

The award winning rapper Gigi Lamayne discovered that she is a sangoma at 11 years of age. Her elders and parents didn’t understand what was happening to the young Gigi but as she grow up, it became obvious that it was a calling to become a sangoma. After accepting the calling, she felt a sense of purpose she has never felt before. What gave her a sense of purpose is helping people in their adversities. While talking to Drum on iono FM, Gigi claims that she had a great spiritual awakening has left certain things behind including friends. She said her diet has changed and she now values meditation.

No9 is Dakalo Malopye

In June 2022 Daily Sun reported on How Dakalo Malopye, an actress known for acting in Scandal, was balancing school, acting and being a sangoma. The actress had graduated to become a sangoma about 8 months prior the report. Dakalo believes that she accepted ancestral calling to become a sangoma in honor of her grandfather who gave her everything. Malopye has already done the celebration of home coming as a sangoma and on the same day she was celebrating her birthday.

No10 Busi Zokufa

Former Generations actor Busi Zokufa was greatful to the ancestral calling that she accepted because she said it saved her life. According to Daily Sun, Busi struggled for some time before deciding to heed the call of Amadlozi (the Ancestors) and becoming a sangoma. She claims she would have night mares of eating her acting scripts, bad dreams and spinal cord injuries until her ancestors come to her rescue. She had to do everything they told her including to becoming a sangoma. Now she is grateful that they healed her and now she can carry on with her life normally. [3]

No11 is L’vovo Derrango

After 6 months of training in 2016, L’vovo Derrango became a sangoma adding to his occupation of being a musician. The ceremony of his home coming happened in November 2016 and it was attended by close friends only. During the interview with Sunday Sun, L’vovo’s trainer said it was an obligation for L’vovo to do the traditional healing initiation but he is not obliged to leave his music career and become a full time sangoma.

No12 is Noninzi Williams

Actress Noninzi Williams who played the role of Cuba in Rhythm City drama series is a sangoma. There is no information of when she graduated as one but she has been practicing as one for some years now. According to online-scoops.com website the actress points out that they are poles apart from witchdoctors, who dabble in black magic.

No13 is Freedom Hadebe

Veteran actor Freedom Hadebe known for Generations, Nomzamo and other dramas is also a sangoma. The actor also has been practicing as a traditional healer for a while now and he takes his calling serious. “I’ve always dedicated my work to my ancestors so they always carried me through.’ He says . “I had always obeyed their instructions and always made sure that I don’t bite more than I can chew.”
