Recently Sello Maake ka-Ncube, an actor known for Scandal and Skeem Saam shot up social media trends when he announced he got a honorary PhD from Trinity International Bible University. Sadly, his celebrations for a honorary recognition was short lived because the minister of higher education Blade Nzimande said the PhD is fake since it was awarded by an unregistered institution. According to the minister, the university has no right or authority to offer any qualifications. Sello is not the only one who received this bogus qualification, there are lot of people who fell for this. [1]

Another Skeem Saam actor to receive a fake PhD from Trinity International Bible University is Elizabeth Serunye. Unbeknownst to her of the fakeness of her qualification, Serunye shared on Instagram that she was now a honorary doctor. “Graduation day. Honour me as DR Sikasu Serunye, ” she wrote. Unfortunately there is no honor for her but pity because she has been scammed into believing she is something she is not.

Number 3: Deborah Fraser

Legendary musician Deborah Fraser who passed away in May 2022 at the age of 56, died believing she was a doctor of music but it was all fake recognition. She was awarded a doctorate of philosophy from the Trinity International Bible University in October 2021.

Another Gospel musician Winnie Mashaba had to put on her long red graduation gown only to receive a fake PhD in 2019. “It is indeed an honor to be among those selected by Trinity International Bible University to be honoured as a doctor of philosophy in sacred music,” she wrote in a now deleted Instagram post announcing her news. After fake doctorate news, a doctor in EGS from University of Cape Town comforted Winnie Mashaba in a post saying, “When you meet her, tell her to return this paper. Nonetheless, we’ll keep supporting and enjoying her music. Proper recognition and honour will come.

Number 5: Zwelinzima Vavi

Well known unionist and secretary general of South African Federation Trade Union (SAFTU), Zwelinzima Vavi fell for the trap of the bogus university in 2018. He was awarded the bogus qualification and was happy like everyone else. Now that everyone is aware it’s fake, he is distancing himself from it that he didn’t ask for it nor did he bride for it. He claims he was approached by q certain Bishop who said he wanted him honored for his contribution to the struggle of social justice.

This happened after he collapsed while performing on stage during Johannesburg’s ultra South Africa music festival. After his death everyone was left to speculate what led to his collapse since there were no autopsy results which were published. His mother suspected foul play and the latest news showed that she was getting frustrated of waiting for results from toxicology since she believed her son was poisoned. Either were no further updates on weather he was poisoned or not. [1]

No2. Nichume Siwundla, died in 2019 aged 27

House music vocalist Nichume allegedly threw herself off an apartment building after complaining of having serious problems. She probably left no latter about the details of her problems which led to her death but family and friends were shocked because she appeared strong. Nichume is one of Mzansi celebrities who died at very young age before they reached 30 years old. She was only 27 years old when she decided to terminate her gift of life.

No3. Siyabonga Zubane, died in 2022 at the age of 23

Gomora actor Siyabonga Zubane is one of the youngest celebrities to die in South Africa in 2022. He was 23 years old when he died on 1 May 2022. Siyabonga died after he took his own life but there was no official report on the matter. His mother described him as humble and family oriented. Siyabonga was known for playing a stint role in Isibaya as Bhungezi and for playing Sdumo on Gomora.

No4. Angie Oeh, died in 2023 at the age 24

Afrikaans rapper, Angelique Eurika Greeff died on 19 August 2023 following stage 4 lung cancer battle. She was only 24 years old when she passed away at Life Wilgers Hospital in Pretoria. After being diagnosed with cancer, Angie expressed she needed R200 000 for medical treatment and a BackaBuddy campaign was created which raised about R278 000 in donations. Unfortunately it was too late for her to be well after diagnosis. Some of songs featured top artists including Jack Parow, Van Pletzen, Loufi, Biggs and DJ Kay Faith.

Actor Thapelo Maropefela died in 2021 after allegedly beaten by a group of security guards. According to Daily Sun, a police source claims the actor was found unresponsive on Sunday 25 October, 2021, in his Airbnb apartment in Fairland, Johannesburg. He was 22 years old by the time of death and his death broke many hearts considering that he was still young.

No6. Anele Tembe, died in 2021 at the age of 22

Influencer, entrepreneur and model Anele Tembe died in 2021 at the age of 22 after she jumped off the balcony of Pepper Hotel building in Cape Town. According to reports she jumped off after an altercation with her boyfriend, the late rapper AKA whose real name is Kernan Fobes. Two years after her death, AKA was gunned down in Durban together with his friend Tebello Motsoane. In January 2024, Durban Girls College opened a library in her honour since she was a former student of the very same school. [2]
