In February 2024, Sophie Ndaba opened up to publications about getting married for the fourth time after three failed marriages. Sophie Ndaba, an actress known for Generations as Queen Moroka, was married three times and divorced three times. Her first marriage happened in 1996 to Themba Ndaba an actor, and they were blessed with two children. They divorced in 2007 but they never opened up about their reasons for divorce. In 2011 Sophie found love again and she got married to bishop Keith Harrington but they divorced two years later in 2013. After divorce, both were outspoken about their divorce pointing fingers at each other, Sophie claimed the bishop was a fraud who was just using her. The third divorce occurred happened in 2021 after getting married to the businessman-turned pastor Max Lichaba. Sophie accused him being abusive and cheating her with other women. [1]

Businessman Lebo Gunguluza married twice and divorced twice. His first marriage happened in the year 2000 and he was divorced by his wife in 2008. There is no clear information about why they separated with his first wife. In 2017 Lebo Gunguluza married Lebohang Mokoena in a lavish wedding which costed him millions. Their union lasted for four years before they divorced but there were no clear reasons for their separation. In 2023 it was reported that Lebo Gunguluza had found love again in Anele Zondo and there were rumors that they are planning to get married.

Musician, playwright and actor Mbongeni Ngema is like Lebo Gunguluza because he married twice. His first marriage happened in February 1982 when he married Xoliswa Nduneni-Ngema. After they divorced, Nduneni-Ngema published a memoir in which she accused him of abuse, which included allegations of rape. During the marriage, he had a long-running affair with actress Leleti Khumalo, starting when she was still a teenager.

He remained married, with Nduneni-Ngema acting as his business partner during the making of the film of Sarafina, in which Khumalo starred. After the film’s release in October 1992, the couple divorced, and he married Khumalo. Khumalo was 15 years younger than Ngema. They divorced in 2005 after she left him. She later called her marriage “disgusting”, saying that she was not allowed any freedom and had “fourteen years of misery”.

Before his series of marrying ans divorcing, Lebo married Viveca Gipson for five years and they were blessed with two children.

In 1990, Lebo met Nandi Ndlovu and a relationship was kindled between the two of them. Their relationship lasted for 11 years before allegations of cheatings ripped their more than a decade old relationship. In 2007 divorced but carried on with their relationship until 2008. After that Lebo met Angela Casara and married her in 2008. They splitted in 2013 but remarried again in 2017 but in between, Lebo had engaged Malefu. Lastly, Lebo married Pretty Samuels in 2021 and divorced in 2023. [2]

Alright, this one might not be a typical celebrity but a liberation hero, but either way he is celebrated for that so we put him on this list. Yes, the late and former president of South Africa Nelson Mandela was married three times and divorced twice. His first marriage was to Evelyn Ntoko Mase in October 1944. They divorced in March 1958 under the multiple strains of his alleged adultery and constant absences devoted to the liberation struggle.

Mandela’s second wife was the social worker Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, whom he married in June 1958. They divorced in March 1996. In 1998 on his 80th birthday, Mandela married his third wife Graça Machel, the ex-wife of Mozambiqan president Samora Machel. They remained married until his death in December 2013.

Singer, trumpeter and composer Hugh Masekela was one of the South African celebrities who married many times before death. Hugh was firstly married to Merriam Makeba in 1964, unfortunately they divorced two years later in 1966. Masekela’s second marriage, to Chris Calloway, daughter of the jazz artist Cab Calloway, ended in divorce, as did his marriages to Jabu Mbatha and Elinam Cofie. During the last few years of his life, he lived with the dancer Nomsa Manaka.

Actor Sello Maake ka-Ncube first got married to Palesa Mboweni probably in 2013 but divorced a less than a year later in 2014. After divorce Sello stayed without committing to any marriage until 2021 when he met Pearl Solo Mbewe and decided to marry her. Unfortunately their beautiful marriage started collapsing in 2023 because Sello was rekindling love with his ex.
