Recently we heard of the release of the paralympian Oscar Pistorius from prison and South Africa had mixed feelings about that. What most people don’t know is that it’s not only Oscar who was released but a five celebrities were recently released from prison on parole. 

Number 1 is Pitch Black Afro – released on 24 August 2023

Thulani Ngcobo, a hip hop artist popularly known as Pitch Black Afro, was released from prison on 18 August 2023 after serving three years for the death of his partner. Ngcobo was sentenced to 10 years in June 2020 for culpable homicide after killing his long-term partner, Catherine Modisane, during an altercation. According to some recent reports Pitch Black Afro is planning his future probably in the music industry relaxed at home. [1]

Number 2 is Thulani Cele – Released on 1 December 2023

Another recent prison release is that of Thulani Cele,  a soccer player who was arrested in the United States after alleged to have stolen a mobile phone. Cele had claimed he borrowed a phone when he was in this difficult situation to make a call, that he was innocent. He was found guilty of the charges and was sentenced to 18 months in prison on 4th of December 2022. He was release on the 1st of December 2023 after serving 12 months in prison.

Number 3 is Oscar Pistorius- Released on 5 January 2024

The most recent and controversial prison release is that of Oscar Pistorius who was sentenced to 15 years in prison after killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. He shot the 29-year-old model Reeva dead through a locked bathroom door on Valentine’s Day in 2013. After 11 years since he murdered Reeva, Oscar was released on 5 January 2024 on parole to serve his remaining sentence until 2029. [2]

Number 4 is Jacob Zuma -Released 11 August 2023

In early August 2023, the former president of South Africa Jacob Zuma returned to prison in the early morning of 11 August to continue serving his sentence for contempt court. Later that day he was released under a program to relieve overcrowding in the country’s jails, the authorities said. Political opponents accused the government run by ANC for using favoritism to release Mr Zuma.

Number 5 is Sindisiwe Manqele- Released on

Another shocking earliest prison release of our list is that of Sindisiwe Manqele who killed her famous boyfriend Flabba. She was sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2016. After serving half of her sentence, she was released from prison on parole serving her remaining sentence at home until 23 May 2028. When she appeared on the Podcast and Chill with MacG to share some of her story, Sindi claimed she didn’t mean to kill her boyfriend, it was a mistake. [3]
