On September 27, 1992, he was born in Chiweta, Malawi, one of the poorest nations in Africa. In his native Mlowe, Malawi, he took up soccer as a hobby and eventually became a professional player for the Brave Warriors, a local team. In club football, Mhango has played for the Big Bullets, Bloemfontein Celtic, Brave Warriors, Lamontville Golden Arrows, and Bidvest Wits. In June 2019, he signed on with the Orlando Pirates. He relocated to AmaZulu in June 2022.

He debuted internationally for Malawi in 2012. In September 2012, Mhango was brought into the Malawi squad in front of their forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Ghana. It was announced in May 2013 that he would be unable to participate in two World Cup qualifying matches due to impending school exams.

Mhango scored twice in Malawi’s first Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Chad on May 17, 2014. In the 2021 African Cup of Nations, Mhango’s goal against Morocco qualified for the top three CAF Awards for goal of the competition. [2]
