Nowadays, most relationships and marriages are end before they even reach 5 years. This is not just happening to hetero couples but gay ones as well. Recently we saw the end of famous gay relationships in South Africa and most people were shocked. 6 gay relationships Which Ended in tears

Number 1 Somizi and Tau Mogale

South African social media influencer and personality, Somizi Mhlongo was married to Mohale Motaung on 28 September 2019. The marriage was an inspiration to the gay community in South Africa and around the world. But in August 2021 the couple were already seeing woes in their marriage and Somizi wanted a divorce alleging that Mohale was abusive. In 2023 their divorce or separation was finalized but they noted that their marriage was not recognized by the state. [1]

Number 2 is Khaya Dladla and Mercutio Buthelezi

In 2020 the most famous gay couple of that time, Khaya Dladla and Mercutio Buthelezi announced that they’re engaged. Few months after that Khaya Dladla got a big role on etv drama House of Zwide and moved to Johannesburg leaving his husband to be in Durban. This limited their time together and led the celebrated couple to separate in June of 2022. Their seemingly beautiful relationship ended in tears and heart break.

Number 3 is Simphiwe Dana and Phumeza Matshikiza

In March 2021, the award-winning singer-songwriter Simphiwe Dana was reported to have broken up with her former lover, Phumeza Matshikiza. The two had been together since late 2021 or early 2020 and got engaged in December 2020. The relationship was private until December 2020 because Simphiwe was not known as lesbian nor was she ready to come out. [2]

Number 4 is Mandisa Nduna and Thishiwe Ziqubu

Another relationship which was blossoming as a good example in the gay community was that of Mandisa and Thishiwe. The two got together since 2016 and most people looked up to them. On the 1st of October 2020, Mandisa Nduna announced on Twitter (now X) that “Its time Thishiwe and I have been broken up for a while now. I feel incredibly grateful for the past (almost) 4 years.” The tweet was clear that they had broken up for a while  the chances are, they were ashamed or just not ready to announce their break up immediately.

Number 5 is Selby Mkhize and late boyfriend

South African actor and influencer Selby Mkhize had a loving boyfriend years ago and the two were happy together. Selbeyonce, who is openly gay, was heart broken when that very loving boyfriend died in a car crush. This broke Selby’s heart since this man was promising to marry him. “I don’t know if I can love again,” he said expressing his loss and pain. [3]
