He serves as chairman of the luxury goods companies Richemont, located in Switzerland, and Remgro, based in South Africa. He has served as Compagnie Financiere Richemont’s CEO since April 2010. Early life and education

Growing up in Stellenbosch, Rupert studied economics and corporate law at the University of Stellenbosch and Paul Roos Gymnasium. Although he left school to pursue a career in business, the institution still granted him an honorary doctorate in Economics in 2004. [1]

An honorary doctorate was granted to him by Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in 2008. Rupert has been called “reclusive” by Barron’s and the Financial Times, as he avoids public events and rarely does interviews. “Rupert the Bear” is his moniker. Rupert has stated that he supports and believes in the concept of a basic income for all.

Business Career of Johann Rupert

Rupert completed his business apprenticeship in New York City, working for three years at Lazard Freres and two years at Chase Manhattan. In 1979, he went back to South Africa and established Rand Merchant Bank, where he served as CEO.

1984 saw the merger of RMB and Rand Consolidated Investments to establish RMB Holdings and his departure to join the Rembrandt Group, his father’s business. 1989 established Compagnie Financiere Richemont in 1988, and the same year, Rothmans International plc named him a non-executive director. The Sunday Times awarded him “Businessman of the Year” the same year. In 1989 he was Selected as the Rembrandt Group’s vice chairman.
1990 The Cape Town Chamber of Commerce and Die Burger newspaper named me the year’s business leader. established the Vendôme Luxury Group SA division of Richemont. He was named Chairman of Rembrandt Group Limited in 1991. The World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, recognised him as one of the 200 “Global Leaders of Tomorrow” in 1992. 1993 The A.H.I. Personal life of Johann Rupert

Johann is wed and has children. The name of his spouse is Gaynor Rupert. Her spouse persuaded her to pursue her passion of racing horses as a breeding endeavour. She oversees their Drakenstein farm as well. Three children are a blessing for the couple. Two daughters, Caroline and Hanneli Rupert, and a son, Anton Rupert Jr. With the exception of sporadic articles about the son Anton Rupert Jr, who bears the grandfather’s name and founded their economic empire, not much is known about the children.
