Early life of Eric Mathoho

In Tshiombo, not far from Thohoyandou, Mathoho was born. He was conceived on May 1, 1990. He started playing football at a young age. Eric played games in the corn fields around harvest time and made balls out of onion bags. He tore off his toe nails when he kicked the ground and bruised his feet. [1]

Club Career

Bloemfontein Celtic

Mathoho joined Bloemfontein Celtic from Dolphins FC in Limpopo after trialling there in July 2009 alongside two other players under Owen da Gama. In a 0-0 tie with Mamelodi Sundowns on February 3, 2010, Mathoho made his professional debut under Clinton Larsen and was named Man of the Match. On February 27, 2011, he scored his first goal in a 5-0 victory over Supersport United. His first six months as a professional saw him put on impressive performances, and he was linked to Maccabi Haifa and FC Twente, but the €1 million deal never materialised. The contract fell through as a result of financial regulations in the Netherlands that required foreign players to receive a sizable payment. These regulations were put in place to regulate the calibre of players imported into the country. The deal to replace Douglas, who was departing after being linked to Juventus and Bayern Munich, with Mathoho fell through. [2]

Mathoho joined Chiefs in June 2012 after being connected to them in January. He had also been linked to Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns. In a 4-1 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns, where Chiefs were already four goals down by the 36th minute, Mathoho made his debut on August 5, 2012. Mathoho dislocated his shoulder on September 13, 2012, while playing Maritzburg United. He scored his first goal for the Chiefs on April 3, 2013, in a 1-1 tie with Maritzburg United. In his debut season, he captured both the league championship and the Nedbank Cup. On his 24th birthday, Mathoho made his CAF Champions League debut on March 1 against Liga Muculmana in a 4-0 victory at Moses Mabhida Stadium. Mathoho was a member of a side at the start of the 2014–15 season that lasted 19 games without dropping a point, won the MTN8 without giving up a goal, and eventually won the league.

International career

On May 14, 2011, he made his international debut for South Africa against Tanzania in a friendly match. For the first time since 2008, Mathoho participated in every minute of South Africa’s successful AFCON qualification campaign in 2014 under Ephraim Mashaba. [3]
