Early life of Kagiso Modupe

He was born on the 17th of April in 1984 in Kwathema, East Rand in the province of Gauteng in South African. He grew up in his home town of Kwathema in Springs. Growing up, Kagiso had interest and love for acting but he was told that acting is just a hobby. With his supportive family, he was told and encouraged to follow his heart and empower himself in his passion.

“My parents when they said an education, they actually meant educate yourself in what you are passionate about. I got into the art, which I thought was a hobby because I grew up being told its a hobby. I used their words in a positive way and I got to understand the industry holistically.” says Kagiso Modupe.

He was very active and loved dancing, karate and sports like football and so forth. Both his parents played a big role in shaping Kagiso’s future positively. His father encouraged him as he could and his mother as well. His mother Massesi was the one who taught him not to be ashamed of his hustle and taught him business skills.

Education of Kagiso Modupe

He attended Nigel Primary school then
Nigel High School where he obtained basic education and matric respectively. After obtaining matric, Kagiso studied Bsc in Human Physiology and Anatomy, and a BA in Sports Psychology.

He wanted to study medicine but his mathematics results were not very good. So he just resorted for Human Physiology and Anatomy. According to him education did not become his path to success contrary to what Mandela said that “Education is the Key to Success”.

Acting career of Kagiso Modupe

His career started in 2005 when he made his debut appearance in the acting industry. From 2006 to 2010 he starred as Sammy on SABC 1’s drama series Home Affairs, he starred alongside Yonela Duze, Lerato Mvelase, Andrea Dondolo, Vatiswa Ndara, Lali Dangazele and Brenda Ngxoli. [ ¹]

In 2006 he was also the executive producer of television movie The Good Fight. In 2012 he played the role of a police officer in a film Gog’ Helen.

Kagiso became very prominent when he played Mangaliso “Mangi” Nyathi in etv’s long running soapie opera Scandal alongside Sello Maake Ka-Ncube and Mapaseka Koetle. In 2018 he announced his departure from Scandal after 14 years on the drama.

2019 to present

He starred as ‘Thami’ in the movie Losing Lerato in 2019. Kagiso and his wife Liza paid for the film. The film was shown in theaters throughout South Africa and eSwatini. Due to red tape, the film was not screened in Botswana. At the Idyllwild International Picture Festival in California, the film gained critical acclaim and won six awards.

Kagiso took home the award for Best Actor Feature, Samela Tyelbooi took home the award for Best Actress Feature, and his daughter Tshimollo took home the award for Best Child Performance. The film also won the Golden Era Humanitarian Narrative Award, Best Original Score Award, and Festival Favourite Award, in addition to the major accolades.

Apart from acting, he is also a novelist. He authored the novel ‘Along Came Tsakani,’ about a wonderful man who ends up cheating, but it gives women a new perspective on the events. [ ²]

Personal life of Kagiso Modupe

Kagiso Modupe is married to his wife Liza Lopes who is a film producer. They been married since 2009 and they were blessed with two daughters. Their names are: Tshimollo Modupe and Motheo Modupe.

His elder daughter, Tshimollo acted with Kagiso in the film Losing Lerato as the lead role ‘Lerato’. [ ³]
