Number one drama ending in 2023 is the 1Magic Drama series Lingashoni
In March 2022 M-net and Dstv directors and administrators announced that Lingashoni was coming to an end in 2023. This announcement came after only one season of Lingashoni production and it was to be renewed for the second season as its last season. The new season was to premiere on Monday, March 21, 2022, and concludes on Thursday, March 16, 2023.
The reason for terminating the show was not clear but its certainly not because of viewership reduction or irrelevance according to Dstv. Here is their reason;
“1Magic (DStv channel 103) and Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161) channel strategies have been updated to reflect shifting consumer preferences and the competitive landscape.” The statement reads.
The Second drama to which end is The Queen
The Queen which was created by the Ferguson couple Connie Ferguson who is the executive producer and starring, and her late husband Shona Ferguson is also coming to an end in 2023.
The drama’s seventh season which is its final season was renewed, however it will not be a complete season. Season 6 will expire in July of this year with Season 7 making its first episode but it will run through Friday, January 13th, 2023, with 125 episodes instead of the regular 260.
At 21h00, a new South African telenovela will take the place of The Queen, although no successor for Lingashoni has been announced. But it won’t be another opera; instead, reality shows and dramas are more likely. This is what they said in their statement:
“The company has re-evaluated its strategy to focus on stabilising the channel slate with a smaller number of high-end series and shows.”
The third drama ending is Durban Gen
Another drama which is set to end is etv’s medical drama series Durban Gen. The show was filmed in Durban and premiered on e.tv in October 2020. It is set in the Newlands East township and the corridors of the Durban General academic, public hospital. Now the drama is set to end in January of 2023.
eMedia said in a statement: “e.tv can confirm that the hospital drama Durban Gen will be coming to an end in January 2023. The decision to decommission the daily drama is part of a business strategy which includes the ongoing review of the on-air life-cycle of all our shows.

“e.tv continues to look forward to fulfilling its mandate of producing exceptional and relevant local content, and the production has successfully achieved its part of the obligation throughout the past 2 years.”
The fourth drama is Legacy which ends in 2022
M-net announced that its telenovela called Legacy is coming to an end after running for not more than two years. The Legacy was officially released on 21 September 2020 and it’s now in its second season. It is produced by Tshedza Pictures, it airs on M-net and runs for about 25 minutes.
Tshedza the production house for Legacy, will conclude the shooting of the second season in February 2022. However, the show will air until September 2022.
According to the Executive Head of Programming and Multichoice Group, ending the popular and award winning telenovela is a strategy that they’ve derived from the surveys with viewers.
“Our viewership surveys guide us to adapt our content to the evolving needs of our customers. While Legacy is a popular show, our M-Net 101 customers have indicated that they now want more limited series rather than long-running telenovelas.
The success of our local strategy depends on how well we tune into what our customers would like to see on their screens,” says Nomsa Philiso, Executive Head: Programming, MultiChoice Group.
