Career of Siyabonga Thwala

Thwala started performing professionally in 1989. In the 1996 made-for-TV film Born Free: A New Adventure, he made his acting debut. He appeared in a cameo in the Tarzan: The Epic Adventures episode “Tarzan and the Scarlet Diamond” (Season 1, Episode 5) that same year.He turned down the part of Godlieb Mofokeng in the brand-new SABC 3 soap opera Isidingo in 1998 because he didn’t feel prepared for a long-term commitment to television. Shortly after, he was cast in the TV comedy Streaks, which was centred on a Cape Town hair salon and featured the now-seasoned Themba Ndaba. He was hired for the Jimmy recurring part on Gazlam in 2003.

Siyabonga Thwala gained notoriety for playing Vusi Zwane in the Scandal! episode that aired on e.tv at the time.He later won the Golden Horn Award (South African Film and Television Award) for best actor in a TV soap opera thanks to his performance. On SABC 1’s Generations in 2007, he was cast in the part of Paul Mashaba, the ruthless businessman Kenneth Mashaba’s younger brother who is a journalist and is portrayed by Seputla Sebogodi. In 2010, he departed the programme.

As taxi-boss Mpiyakhe Zungu on Mzansi Magic’s critically praised Isibaya, he received perhaps the biggest role of his career to date in 2013. The character of Mpiyakhe Zungu became so well-liked by the show’s audience that throughout the majority of the show’s run, the character served as the main character around whom the plot was created. He won the 2014 South African Film and Television Award for Best Actor in a TV Drama for his performance in the part. [2]
