Early life of Nokubonga Khuzwayo: Where and When was she born?

Nokubonga Khuzwayo was born on January 15, 1985 in Umlazi, KwaZulu Natal Province in South African. She was born and bred in Umlazi but she is currently living in eThekwini (Durban). Nokubonga has an identical twin sister, Nokwanda Khuzwayo and they act as cousins on Imbewu the seed.

One thing for sure is, it’s hard to talk about Nokubonga apart from her twin sister because they’re inseparable.

Where did Nokubonga obtain her education?

Nokubonga and Nokwanda attended Umlazi Comtech. After finishing school at Umlazi Comtech they didn’t know what they wanted to do so they enrolled at Coastal KZN TVET College, a technical school that focuses on commerce.

What was Nokubonga and her twin doing before coming to Imbewu?

Their mom, Nokuthula Xulu-Khuzwayo, was an unemployed widow with five girls to feed “and this forced us to go out there and look for a job”. Nokwanda worked as a waitress in Durban, while Nokubonga worked at a call centre in Mount Edgecombe.

They held not these jobs for too long as they felt it wasn’t their dream. So they decided to open a hair salon so they can assist their mother to support their impoverished siblings.

The hair salon transcended the twins’ life to another level, because they used the money they got from acting to finance their dreams of acting, dancing and singing.

Nokubonga Khuzwayo career

Nokubonga started acting on international stages. In 2003, Nokubonga and her twin Nokwanda participated in a play called Madiba’s Magic Song, which “we performed at the Grahamstown Arts Festival,” she said talking to News24. Nokubonga played the late Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and her twin sister, Nokwanda, was in the ensemble.

In 2007 Nokubonga Khuzwayo joined the Lion King Production and traveled the world. But while she was still away from home for a decade with the Lion King, she became homesick, developed depression and had to come back home.

When she returned home she asked the Imbewu creator Duma kaNdlovu to join his acting class and Duma agreed. By that time Duma was looking for twins to join his cast so he auditioned Nokubonga Khuzwayo and her twin sister Nokwanda Khuzwayo and they got the job. Nokubonga acts as Zakhithi Bengu the daughter of Ncgolosi and Nokwanda acts as Futhi the daughter of Pastor Phakade, the big brother of Ncgolosi.
