South Africa has lost quiet a few celebrities in the past 12 months or so. These celebrities include actors, fashion designers, musicians and influencers of different kinds. We loved them and wished they live a little longer to continue bless us with their God given talent. we are going to look at 11 SA Musicians who died recently and how they died shockingly.
Number 1, Vusi Ma R5
Vusi Ma R5, born Itumeleng Mosoeu, who was known for his hit song Tse Nnyane, died on the 30th of January 2023. South Africans were shocked to hear this. The celebrity was shot dead at 1am morning on 30 January which led to his passing. No one was arrested since today. [1]
Number 2, DJ Sumbody
Oupa John Sefoka who was known by his stage name as DJ Sumbody, died from a hail of bullets on 20 November 2022. His family didn’t want to confirm some of the details of his passing, but he allegedly died from gunshot wounds. Sefoka who broke into the industry with his hit track, Monate mpolaye featuring musician Cassper Nyovest, was on his way from a performance in Woodmead. He was due to perform at the All White Veuve Clicquot Picnic the following day when he was assassinated.
Number 3, AKA
Kiernan Jarryd Forbes known as AKA, is one of the recent celebrity deaths which shocked Mzansi. He died on 10 February 2023. Just like the first two we have mentioned, AKA died from gunshot wounds as well. The police stated in a statement days after his passing that they were treating AKA’s death as an assassination. The star was dating Nadia Nakai, a Zimbabwean South African rapper and had a daughter with DJ Zinhle. Forbes gained recognition after releasing his single “Victory Lap” from his debut studio album, Altar Ego. He was one of the most popular South African musicians of his era and the greatest selling South African hip hop artist of all-time.
Number 4, Deborah Frazer
Deborah was a Gospel musician and star who was known for hit songs such as Abanye bayombona and Ngeke ngiyeke ukuthandaza. She died on May 15, 2022, at the age of 56, at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, after suffering a stroke. Fraser was the most influential gospel artist who broke the heart of many fans when she passed away. [2]
Number 5, Riky Rick
Rikhado Muziwendlovu Makhado known professionally as Riky Rick, was a South African rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer and entrepreneur. He was best known for his hit song Boss Zonke from his album Family Values. Riky Rick broke the heart of many hip hop fans when he committed suicide on 23 February 2022. Before death, Riky spoke so often about how he had suicidal thoughts and how he thought that every album he releases will be his last album.
Number 6, Tumi Tladi
On 30 July, South African music fans were shocked to hear that Tumi Tladi died at the age of 30. He was a musician, who had worked with Nadia Nakai on the song Presidential. Just like Riky Rick, Tumi committed Suicide as well by gassing himself. This is after Tladi’s family speculated that the rapper might have been murdered as he wasn’t suicidal before passing away a month ago on 10 July.

Number 8, Tokollo Magesh Tshabalala

He was known for being a kwaito star and fans wondered who would carry the genre like he did.
Number 9, Mandla Mampintsha Maphumlo
Big Nuz originator Mandla ‘Mampintsha‘ Maphumulo died on Saturday, 24 December 2022, a statement from his music label Afrotainment confirmed. According to the producer, Mampintsha was admitted after he suffered what was described at the time as a ‘minor’ stroke “upon his return from a performance with Big Nuz. Less than a day later, South Africa’s entertainment industry was gutted by the news of the star’s death. Mandla was known for songs such as Umlilo and Joburg. He was married to Babes Wodumo who is also a musician. They were blessed with a son Sponge Wodumo.
Number 10, Costa Titch
Costa Titch’s death is the most recent deaths to occur after the death of AKA and Vusi Ma R5. In Costa’s sudden death, it doesn’t appear like there was foll play since he collapsed on stage. He was perfoming when he collapsed, and it’s obvious fans didn’t see that one coming. Later, his family confirmed: “Death has tragically knocked at our door,” in a statement on Instagram. He was known for Amapiano, Hip Hop and for dancing and had confirmed to have joined Akon’s record Label days before passing. [4]
Number 11, Gloria Bosman Read
Gloria died on 15 March 2023 and has becoming the most recent death that shocked Mzansi. Her death news trended on Twitter after it was reported by Phil Mphela and it reached most people through Briefly News reports. Mzansi is really in shock after series of celebrity deaths that has seen Costa Titch, AKA and eight other we have just reported.
