Natasha Sutherland is a 51-year-old South African actress, motivational speaker and author. She is best known for playing Layla McKenzie in e.tv soapie opera Scandal!. She also starred in other famous television serials such as Tarzan: Epic Adventures, Egoli: Place of Gold and Operation Delta Force.

Early life of Natasha Sutherland

Natasha Sutherland was born on November 20, 1970 in the city of Durban, KwaZulu Natal Province in South Africa. She was born to two choreographers, Geoffrey Sutherland and Kenlynn Sutherland (formally Ashby). She grew up in Durban and apart from that nothing much is known about her childhood.

But in her childhood, her parents used to take her to Sai Woo in Johannesburg and there were all these beautiful pictures on the wall with Chinese lettering. Her mother is a good storyteller and Natasha grew up to love story telling as well.

“When I was little my folks used to take me to the Sai Woo in JHB and there were all these beautiful pictures on the wall with Chinese lettering and my mom – a brilliant storyteller (and obvious fibber), pretended she could read the writing and she’d tell us the stories whilst we ate. I love food and love stories, so this was a match made in heaven!” She said. [ ¹]

Acting career of Natasha Sutherland

She began her career in 1991, with roles in numerous musical theatre productions including Good Vibrations (directed by Themi Venturas for the now-defunct performing arts council NAPAC), Spring Awakening and Jesus Christ Superstar, which had musical direction by her father, Geoffrey Sutherland. Natasha continued to work in theatre and film, whilst doubling as a brand ambassador for various companies.

Television career of Natasha Sutherland

She made her television debut in 1992, as a presenter on the children’s show Kideo. In 1994, she landed the role of Carrie in the SABC drama series Honeytown, which is based in the music industry. The next year, she returned for a second season. She also participated in the SABC drama series The Uninvited Guest in 1995, and went on to star in a number of other programmes such as Sinbad, Tarzan: The Epic Adventures, and Golden City Dreams.

In 1997, she was cast as Sam Ryan in the M-Net soap Egoli: Place of Gold for its sixth season. So she lasted six seasons on the show before leaving in 2003. She guest starred in an episode of the SABC2 police procedural series Zero Tolerance (Season 2, Episode 4) on July 29, 2004, after leaving Egoli. She was cast in the recurring role of Rosie Waxman on M-soap Net’s opera The Wild in 2011, making her debut in Season 1, Episode 54. (which aired on 16 June, 2011).

In the M-Net drama series Lioness, she plays Megan, Sam’s (Shannon Esra) sister-in-law and Jason’s (Frank Rautenbach) wife who hails from a political family, in 2021.

Natasha Sutherland is a book writer and a publisher

In 2009, she published the motivational book Bittersweet, which was inspired by her marriage and divorce. She also wrote a sequel called Fairytale and a children’s book called Green & Blue. In 2010, she was the first guest on Melanie Bala’s talk show Let’s Chat… with Mel, where she discussed the book Bittersweet. [ ²]

Personal life of Natasha Sutherland

Natasha Sutherland was married singer and actor Steve Hofmeyr (Steve Hofmeyr) in 1998, divorcing him in 2008. [ ³] She divorced him acrimoniously citing Steve’s 10-year relationship with fitness instructor Janine van der Vyver.[4]The couple has two sons: Benjamin and Sebastian.
