Mpho Molepo is a 42-year-old South African actor best known for playing the role of Fats in e.tv former soapie Rhythm City. He also appeared in other television serials including Yizo Yizo, Zone 14 and iKhaya. In 2021 he landed landed two roles including being casted as Thami in DiepCity and as Jazzy T in Skeem Saam.

Early life of Mpho Molepo

Mpho Molepo was born in Johannesburg, Gauteng Province in South Africa on May 15 in 1979. He is the son of Arthur Molepo, a veteran actor best known for playing Busang, the black sheep of the family, in the SABC1 soap opera Generations. Growing up in Gauteng, Mpho looked up to his father who would take him to theatres where he was performing. The first time Mpho went to theatre he was 3 years old and he would go there almost everyday after school.

“I was 3 when I first went to theatre. I think I am into theatre because my father took me there at a very young age, I remember seeing him on stage koMarket Theatre, I think it was a show called “Kecheneng” and he was acting as a maid, when I got home i remember asking him that I saw him on stage wearing a skirt (he said this in Sotho and he sounded very cute),” said Mpho. So, after finishing his matric he went straight into acting. Mpho also enrolled for music classes at East Side after finishing his high school studies. He empowered himself with formal training in theatre performances by enrolling and studying at Market Theatre Laboratory.

Mpho’s acting career started in theatre where he portrayed characters on stage doing live performance. He made his acting debut by firstly joining an acting agency in 1998 which helped him to get acting roles. After joining acting and gained experience in acting, he started his own company called M Projects about theatre acting where he worked with his father Arthur Molepo.

He also joined television dramas and performed in quite a number of television serials and films. In July 2007 Mpho made his debut in Rhythm City when it premiered on e.tv. His role of playing Fats in Rhythm City boasted his fame and most people continued to call him Fats even after the series was cancelled. He also played Digger Moloi in Zone 14 from season 1 to season 3.

After that he played Peter Tladi in Zero Tolerance season 1 and Uncle Joseph in iKhaya from season 1 to season 2. In 2021 he was casted as Jazzy T in Skeem Saam season 10 together with Fundiswa Zwane. He was casted in DiepCity season 1 as Thami. His other roles include appearing and starring in Impilo: The Scam, Mazinyo dot Q, Ngemphela and Yizo Yizo. [ ²]

In 2006 Mpho made his debut appearance in South African films when he starred as Pastor Jacobs in Heartlines alongside his Rhythm City colleague Mduduzi Mabaso. In 2008 he appeared in Gangster’s Paradise: Jerusalem as the Older Bully. Then in 2009 he played Sergeant Philani in The No 1. Ladies Detective Agency and in 2010 he played Mandla in State of Violence. His recent role in films was when he starred as a Bus Preacher in Losing Lerato. [ ³]

Personal life and other works

Apart from acting Mpho Molepo loves music. His favourite music is Jazzy, he even studied music after high school. But there is no information that he once collaborated or released his own music.

One amusing fact is Mpho is the biological son of Arthur Molepo the actor. They worked together in the beginning of Mpho’s career in theatre and on Rhythm City when his father played Sydney Tshabalala. They were reconciled on set once again when Mpho joined Skeem Saam playing Jazzy T in 2021 where his father played the role of Captain Malebana.
