Early life of Khanya Mkangisa

She was born on March 13, 1988 in a small town of Peddie in Eastern Cape Province in South Africa. She grew up in Peddie and Johannesburg where she was raised by her mother Vuyokazi Mkangisa. Her mother was a nurse, a single parent and Khanya was her only child whom she raised with a nurse salary.

Khanya developed interest in acting at very young age. And again thanks to her mother who played both parental roles, who helped her begin auditioning at young age. This helped Khanya to land a presenting role at the very young age of 14.

She did not have a good relationship with her father as her parents had divorced when she was quite young. Her father who was a qualified dentist, could not contribute a pen in the young Khanya. And this never set well with Khanya, even when she had grown up. But her father once reached out to her and they made peace. [ ¹]

She obtained her basic education from Eastern Cape but somewhere in her childhood, her mother relocated to Johannesburg for better life. So, she probably finished her primary and secondary school education in Johannesburg.

One thing for sure is, Khanya went to a boarding school at the age of six where she was a very hard-working girl and was among the top achievers. She was the best student in class and in extracurricular activities.

Upon obtaining her matric, she enrolled at AFDA Academy in Johannesburg where. This was AFDA: The School for the Creative Economy, where she graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Arts in motion picture and television.

When Khanya was just a teenager her mother would take her to auditions for acting and presenting. One day she took her to YoTV auditions and the young Khanya bagged a role in the television show. She was just 14 years old and in grade 8 when she landed a role in YoTV. She remained with YoTV for three years before she left for other opportunities.

After that she bagged more presenting jobs such as presenting in SABC2 kids show Hectic nine 9 and Knock Knock. She started to get famous amongst producers and she landed another presenting role in Sweat Dance Challenge, a television show that aired on eTV.

When she was used to stand in front of a camera, Khanya auditioned for acting roles. In 2005 she featured in the television series Zone 14. She continued to juggle acting and presenting. In 2008, Khanya Mkangisa landed a role on uGugu no Andile and she landed yet another role on The Lab, uGugu and Mtunzini.
