Early life of Fulu Mugovhani

She was born in Thohoyandou in Limpopo Province of South Africa on the 7th of September 1990. Her full name is Fulufhelo Mugovhani. She grew up in Thohoyandou where she probably obtained her basic education including matric. Mugovhani credits her passion for acting to her part as Nala in the Lion King musical, which required her to compensate for her voice strain by acting. “That’s when I thought: ‘Hey, I would actually like to take acting as a career.'” She said to 702.

Her father is a former performing arts lecturer at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). She took inspiration from him as he lectured at the very school she was enrolled to. “He was a big part of me discovering my love for the arts and performing arts,” said Fulu. [ ¹]

After finishing her matric in one of the local school she was attending, Fulu enrolled at Tshwane University of Technology to study Musical Theatre. She graduated in 2011 with a degree in Musical theatre. Then she acted in several dramas and films before taking a break to further her studies in arts only to return in 2020.

Fulu began her career in musical theatre plays where she would sing while acting. Her first musical theatre was the Lion King musical where she played the role of Nala compensating acting and singing. After playing the role of Nala, Fulu was fully convinced that she want to become an actress and decided to enroll at TUT to study musical theatre.

Following graduating, Fulu worked and performed as a vocalist at the Festival of the Lion King in theme park of Hong Kong Disney Land in China. In 2013, she made her broadcast debut in the Mzansi Magic musical comedy-drama television miniseries Remix as Nikki. Then she played the role of Anzani, a young aspirant photojournalist who must deal with preconceptions about her values and ambitions because of her association with the trashy tabloid that is Secrets, in the e.tv soapie Scandal!, joining the show in October 2013.

In 2017 Fulu joined the cast of the SABC3 soapie Isidingo in the recurring role of Grace, making her first appearance on 8 May of that year. Later that year, she won her first starring television role as Rendani, a feisty, attractive musangwe fighter who defies her strict father to pursue her ambition of being a champion boxer, in the second season of Mzansi Magic’s boxing-themed soapie Ring of Lies. In 2015 she played the title role in the feature film Ayanda as the title character, directed by Sara Bletcher, which was the opening film at the 36th Durban International Film Festival. In 2017 she starred as Zwanga in Lucky Specials, a 2017 South African musical romantic drama film directed by Reabetswe Rangaka. [ ]

Awards and Nominations of Fulu Mugovhani

The award for Best Actress in a Leading Role at the 12th Africa Movie Academy Awards, the Best Actress in a Feature Film award at the 10th South African Film and Television Awards, and the Best Actress award at the 2015 Africa International Film Festival were all given to her for her performance as Ayanda. She was nominated for Best Actress in a Drama at the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, but didn’t win.

Fulu is married to her sweetheart, Timi Modibedi, who works as a DJ and record producer, in June 2018. Her known family members include her father George Mugovhani who is a lecturer at various universities including Unisa, TUT, Wits when naming a few of them.
