A Historic First Trip Outside South Africa

Three pairs of South Africa-based twins — Keabetswe and Onkabetse Masetlwa, Kefilwenyana and Kefilwe Lovedelia Magano, and Thandeka and Thandiwe Ndenza — arrived in Harare last week to join hundreds of twins from across the region in a vibrant cultural gathering. This marked the first international visit for these duos since their birth, adding a deeply personal layer of excitement to the occasion.

The event brought together an estimated 300 sets of twins from Zimbabwe and beyond, showcasing a rich blend of tradition, friendship and shared experience.

Cultural Exchange and Warm Welcome

The visiting twins were officially welcomed at Robert Mugabe International Airport, where they expressed both gratitude and wonder for the warm reception they received. According to social media posts from community hosts, the twins were warmly received by members of the Zimbabwe Twins community and organisers. (2)

During the celebration, participants engaged in cultural exchanges that included traditional food, music, dances and storytelling, giving the South African visitors a deep and immersive introduction to Zimbabwean heritage. (3)

Bridging Bonds Through Shared Experience

More than a cultural event, the gathering served as a symbol of unity and mutual appreciation across borders. The South African twins met with dignitaries and community leaders, including Zimbabwe’s Minister of Youth, Tino Machakaire, whom they described as welcoming and supportive.

For many of the visitors, the trip was not just an adventure — it was a chance to celebrate the unique twin identity in a setting that embraces and uplifts multiples. Their hosts in Zimbabwe, led by local twin advocacy groups, emphasised the importance of connection, shared heritage and cross-cultural friendship.

What This Visit Means Going Forward

The visit by the South African twins highlights a growing movement across southern Africa that celebrates twins and multiples — not only as a biological rarity, but as an opportunity to build community, break down stereotypes, and promote unity. These gatherings foster intercultural dialogue, strengthen regional ties, and offer young people a unique platform to express identity and belonging.

As the South African visitors return home, many spoke about the lasting friendships made, the cultural insights gained, and the encouragement they received to continue celebrating twin identity across borders — a sentiment that organizers hope will inspire many more such exchanges in the future.
