No1. Letoya Makhene
The first one on our list is actress Letoya Makhene who was accused by her sangoma student Kabelo and her ex lesbian spouse Lebo Keswa of being a fake gobela. What happened is Letoya initiated a sangoma student by the name of Kabelo but the the student was not happy claiming he was scammed R1500 by Letoya. According to others, Kabelo was not scammed since it was an amount he was supposed to pay to be initiated. On top of Kabelo’s accusations, Letoya’s ex partner Lebo Keswa added that Letoya is fake because she didn’t finish her initiation following the death of her gobela before she graduates as a sangoma. And in response, Letoya claims Kabelo was being sent by Lebo Keswa to tremble on her name and gift.
No2. Luyanda Potwana
Another celebrity to be accused of being a fake sangoma is television presenter Luyanda Potwana. This happened in 2023 after the TV presenter started sharing Christian messages on social media platforms and holding Christian seminars wearing like a pastor. Fans were not happy to see someone who graduated as a sangoma practicing Christianity publicly. So, some pastors and fans concluded accusations that Luyanda Potwana is a fake sangoma because he can’t be a pastor and a sangoma at the same time. But Potwana wouldn’t allow people to bully him and told haters that he can’t control what people think.
No3. Phelo Bala
Again in 2023 Phelo Bala announced that he was a sangoma after separating with his partner and many people wondered if it was for real. Most people accused him of being a fake sangoma claiming every celebrity these days is becoming a sangoma. But Phelo had a strong opinion and defense for his calling saying his gift is not something new its only he graduated recently. He added that being a sangoma is not something easy and enjoyable so why would someone chose to fake such a hardship. In the industry, Phelo got his recognition when he was a singer of gospel music group Joyous Celebration.
No4. Dineo Ranaka
Dineo Ranaka like Phelo Bala, is one of those celebrities who got poked by Khanyi Mbau’s accusations of people confusing anxiety with ancestral calling. According to Khanyi, most people especially celebrities were becoming sangomas because they’ve anxiety, so she advices them to change their diet and seeks help. By those words she made allegations against most people that they were fake sangomas and Dineo was not happy about that. So, the following day Dineo posted pictures of herself wearing sangoma attires advising others not to be discouraged by someone who comments on things they don’t understand.
No5. Gogo Maweni
Reality television star and social media influencer Gogo Maweni was dragged on social media discussions that she is a fake gogo. The saga happened in 2022 after a social media user Thuli Mfeka listed almost every celebrity sangoma as fake and the list included Gogo Maweni. So, Maweni was not happy about it and responded accordingly by dismissing her saying she has no life that is why she make such baseless accusations. She further explained that she never came into ubungoma because she is hungry but because it’s a calling.
No6. Palesa Madisakwane
In 2023 Palesa Madisakwane also known as Somizi’s baby mama was accused of being a fake sangoma with no calling. These allegations came from none other than Gogo Maweni after Palesa Madisakwane left and resign from ubungoma to Christianity. She claimed if you are really gifted in ubungoma, it’s impossible to divorce a spiritual gift from your ancestors. She posted a video on social media attacking Palesa calling her a fake sangoma who was never gifted in it claiming that if she was gifted, she wouldn’t throw away her gift otherwise something bad would have happen to her.
No7. Gogo Tyra Manzini
Celebrity sangoma Gogo Tyra Manzini was also accused of being a bogus sangoma by followers after she announced body changes via surgery. According to others if you are called to be a sangoma you can’t go and do surgery like BBL for beauty’s sake. Gogo Manzini is a transgender woman and she relies on surgery to look more feminine, so she want to go to Turkey for major body changes. She believes she will continue with sangomahood even after surgery, but other sangomas claimed this is being fake, if you change your body, ancestors won’t recognize you.
