Career of Shakes Mashaba
Shakes Mashaba began playing football with the amateur Preston Brothers team. He played for the Orlando Pirates, Swaraj FC, and Moroka Swallows throughout his senior career. Shakes Mashaba began working as a coach for Vaal Reef Stars in 1992. He oversaw the South African U-20 team in 1997, guiding them to both the U-20 World Cup and the finals of the African Youth Championship. He guided the careers of Benni McCarthy, Matthew Booth, Wayne Roberts, and Quinton Fortune while serving as a manager. [1]
He oversaw a young squad of players from 1998 to 2002 when managing at the U-20 level. He brought this team, who played well, to the U-23 side, where they competed in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He became the first person to win the Cosafa Cup after being chosen as the Bafana Bafana team’s coach for the first time in 2002.

The team qualified for the 2004 AFCON finals under his direction, however he was removed just before the match due to issues with some SAFA officials. He received criticism for improperly handling the petitions of forward Benni McCarthy and defender Mark Fish to join the Bafana Bafana squad for the Nations Cup. Mashaba also took over as Black Leopards’ manager in 2004 and prevented them from being demoted in the 2003–04 season. He took on the role of coach for Swaziland in May 2008, but quit in June 2010 due to various conflicts. [2]
