At Silver Stars, afterwards known as Platinum Stars, where he developed his game under the guidance of coaches like Steve Komphela, Cavin Johnson, and Allan Freese, Mokwena made his first significant breakthrough into football. He signed up with Mamelodi Sundowns in 2014, and after impressing with the club’s youth squad, he was elevated to serve as one of Mangoba Mnggaithi and Alex Bapela’s assistant managers under manager Pitso Mosimane. Before taking on a position as Milutin Sredojevié’s assistant manager at Orlando Pirates, Mokwena remained at Masandawana until 2017, during which time he assisted the team in winning the 2016 CAF Champions League championship.

Managerial Career of Rulani Mokwena

Orlando Pirates

Mokwena was appointed as Pirates’ new temporary manager in August 2019 following Sredojevic’s sudden resignation, and he made his coaching debut by leading his team to a 1-0 MTN 8 loss to Highlands Park.He managed 14 games over the course of the following five months, winning four, drawing five, and losing five, before switching back to the assistant manager position in December after Josef Zinnbauer was appointed. After being named the interim head coach of fellow Premier Division team Chippa United on March 4, 2020, Mokwena parted ways with Zinnbauer’s team. However, the COVID-19 outbreak, which led to the league’s suspension later that month, and the expiration of his contract in June interfered with his time with the team.
