Early life of Nokuthula Ledwaba Mavuso

Nokuthula Ledwaba Mavuso was born in 1983 in Mofolo which is situated in Soweto township, Johannesburg in Gauteng Province in South Africa. She was raised in Soshanguve, North of Pretoria. She was raised by her mother’s aunt because her mother, who had children at a young age, struggled to raise them on her own. Her mother was pregnant with her when her father died, and until lately, she had little knowledge about her father’s family.

In November 2016, it was reported that Nokuthula had found her roots by Sowetan. She had found out her father’s family thus his surname which she now uses. Before she found out who her father was, she used the name Nokuthula Ledwaba and when she found her father’s family she changed to Nokuthula Mavuso. [ ¹]

Nokuthula Mavuso made her debut appearance in the acting industry at the age of 19. She was still young and without formal training so she joined community theatres where she mastered her skills. Her road to stardom was not an easy one, she has mentioned that in her early years that she was ridiculed by older actress, and had to deal with harassment from male directors.

But despite the difficulties of her road to success, Nokuthula Ledwaba has appeared in several prominent South African dramas and she has build her name. Prior to her television roles like Tshidi, she toured South Africa and the United Kingdom with a number of children’s and educational theatre plays. After that she appeared in the e.tv soapies such as Backstage playing as a wild child, Lu, and as diva-in-the-making Tshidi Khuse on Rhythm City.

In the e.tv drama series Umlilo, she played Dumile, a city girl born and reared in Soweto who is the second wife in a polygamous marriage. After that she landed a role in 1Magic telenovela The River where she plays the role of Angelina. [ ²]

In 2016, Nokuthula starred in the remake of the famous American television series Roots. The first season of Roots, which aired in 1977, is still one of the most watched drama programmes in American television history.
