Cox was born in Mobile, Alabama, and was raised in the AME Zion church by a single mother and grandmother. Cox claims she attempted suicide when she was 11 years old, after she realised she had feelings for her male peers and had been ridiculed for several years for not acting “the way someone assigned male at birth was meant to act.”
With her role as Sophia Burset on Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black, she became the first transgender person to be nominated for an Emmy Award in an acting category, and the first since composer Angela Morley in 1990.
She became the first transgender woman to win a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Class Special as executive producer for Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word in 2015. As Cameron Wirth on CBS’s Doubt in 2017, she became the first transgender person to play a transgender series regular on American broadcast television.

Laverne Cox first and second boyfriend
Cox dated few boyfriends since she did gender transformation. Her first boyfriend was not made known to the public but what we know is he was not gay nor did he ever dated transgender woman.
After that she dated Kyle Draper, unfortunately their relationship ended in summer 2019 after two years being together. A few months later, she put out a call for potential dates, writing on Instagram, “Single lady here. It’s ok to slide into my DM’s gentlemen. Don’t be scared. Just be respectful. Her third relationship as a Trans-woman
In 2021 she reported that she had fell in love again but she did not reveal the details of who was her boyfriend. The actor first revealed she’s in a relationship in January 2021, confirming she had been dating somebody for around six months, and has no plans to make her partner public.
By the time of the reports, her boyfriend whom she was dating was 22 years younger while she was 48 years old. “It’s hard to find love. I’m a 48-year-old Black trans woman who’s kind of famous and I feel like it’s a miracle that I found love again. I’m just celebrating that and super excited that God has brought this man into my life.” she said.
“There’s a lot of misunderstanding because I think the womanhood of trans is often denied by a lot of people. So men who are attracted to trans women are attracted to women – they’re not gay. People assume they’re gay and so it gets really confusing. If we can just accept that trans women are women, that the men who date us are dating a woman – that’s been going on forever. If we can just get into that mindset it would be so much better, ”
