So, Thabo Bester was a Facebook Rapist who used the social networking site to lure his victims. According to BBC, he was convicted in 2012 for the rape and murder of his model girlfriend Nomfundo Tyhulu. A year earlier, he was found guilty of raping and robbing two other women. In May, it was reported he had been found dead in his cell after apparently setting himself on fire at the Mangaung Correctional Centre in the city of Bloemfontein. [1]

However, local media began to raise doubts about Bester’s death late last year. In March, police opened a new murder investigation after further tests revealed the deceased was not Bester – and that the unidentified person had died from blunt-force trauma to the head. Employees of the British-owned security company G4S, which ran the prison where he was held, have been accused of helping him flee.
According to other reports, Thabo Bester was assisted by his girlfriend Dr Nandipha to escape prison. The two managed to escape to Tanzania days after getting spotted in Sandton, Johannesburg. The duo was tracked and nabbed in Tanzania last week after the former staged his own fiery “death” in his cell at the Mangaung Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein in May 2022. The two had find a place of refuge in Tanzania but were followed and were arrested. After that they were brought back home on the 13th of April. A plane carrying the duo landed at Lanseria airport in Gauteng this morning, and the fugitives were quickly whisked away in separate vehicles.[2]
Investigative journalist Mzilikazi wa Afrika, who also broke the news, said on Twitter: “There was a warrant of arrest, and it was executed, and one suspect is still at large, I am told. And a third person, who transported the dead body to Mangaung, is also expected to be arrested soon.” [3]
