Midrand, South Africa — In a spectacular night celebrating the best of South African film and television, 16‑year‑old Litlhonolofatso Litlhakanyane emerged as one of the standout winners at the 19th South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs), held over the weekend at the Gallagher Convention Centre.

The young actor took home the Best Supporting Actor in a TV Soap award for his compelling portrayal of Tebello “Tibi” on the popular soapie Scandal!, marking his first SAFTA win and a remarkable milestone early in his career.

“It’s rare to find someone my age winning this type of award,”. Litlhakanyane said backstage after receiving his Golden Horn trophy, expressing both disbelief and gratitude. The award is especially significant given his age and the prestige of the accolade within South Africa’s film and television industry.

A Mentor’s Influence

A key figure in Litlhakanyane’s journey has been veteran actor Jerry Mofokeng wa Makhetha. Who not only plays his on‑screen grandfather in Scandal! but has also served as a mentor off screen. Litlhakanyane fondly recalled visits to Mofokeng wa Makhetha’s home, where seeing rows of SAFTA trophies inspired him to dream big. “He told me one day I would get one — and that day has come,” the young actor said.

Celebration and Recognition

Litlhakanyane’s classmates at the National School of the Arts were among the first to congratulate him, flooding group chats with messages of pride and support. He also thanked his family, faith, and the Scandal! production team for backing him throughout his journey. (1
